In Bamenda, Cameroon, orphaned youth face daily exposure to misinformation, biased narratives, and misleading social media content. Many lack the tools to critically evaluate information, making them vulnerable to rumors and false stories.

Our “Training MIL Ambassadors” workshops bring these youth together in an interactive learning environment. Through practical exercises, participants analyze news articles, videos, and social media posts to spot misinformation and evaluate the credibility of sources.

During the workshops, young learners engage in group discussions, role-playing activities, and real-world case studies. This hands-on approach helps them understand how misinformation spreads and equips them with strategies to counter it.

By the end of the training, participants are certified as Media Literacy ambassadors. They gain the confidence and skills to not only verify information themselves but also teach their peers, families, and communities about spotting and stopping fake news.

This initiative transforms vulnerability into leadership, turning youth into empowered voices of truth in their communities and inspiring a culture of critical thinking and responsible media use.

To extend the impact of ambassador training, we established Media Literacy (MIL) Clubs in local schools and orphanages. These clubs provide safe, ongoing spaces for youth to practice and share their skills.

Club members organize weekly meetings where they analyze trending news, discuss viral videos, and explore misinformation campaigns. They apply the techniques learned during ambassador training in real-life scenarios, strengthening their critical thinking and fact-checking abilities.

In addition to learning, the clubs encourage peer-to-peer teaching. Older or more experienced members mentor younger participants, fostering leadership, teamwork, and a sense of responsibility within the group.

These youth-led clubs also run community awareness initiatives, sharing verified information through posters, presentations, and social media campaigns. This creates a ripple effect, extending media literacy skills beyond the club and into the wider community.

Ultimately, the MIL Clubs empower youth to become local champions of truth, resilience, and critical thinking, ensuring that the lessons learned during the workshops continue to inspire and educate long after the events.
